CharlotteBusinessResources.com sat down with Alexis Gordon, International Relations Manager with the City of Charlotte’s Office of International Relations to discuss the Mayor’s International Community Awards.
CharlotteBusinessResources.com (CBR): What is the purpose of the Mayor’s International Community Awards?
Alexis Gordon (AG): The purpose of the Mayor’s International Community Awards is to recognize individuals, organizations, and corporations for their outstanding contributions to philanthropy and Charlotte’s status as a global center. The awards also encourage newcomers to adopt Charlotte’s entrepreneurial and philanthropic culture.
CBR: Who wins the Mayor’s International Community Awards?
AG: There are a total of six awards – three business awards and three individual awards. The business awards honor foreign-owned firms in the Charlotte region for giving back to the local community, whether through donations, participating in charity events, or encouraging employees to volunteer. There are three foreign-owned firm awards given based on the number of people the company employees locally: small (1-50 local employees), medium (51-200), and large (201+).
The three individual awards are very unique. The Patrick McCrory International Entrepreneur Award recognizes a naturalized U.S. citizen who is running their own business in the Charlotte region. The other two awards are the Richard Vinroot International Achievement Award and the Global Leader Award. (Click here for more detailed information about the criteria for each award.)
CBR: How do you know if a company is foreign-owned?
AG: Every year, the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce releases the “International Review,” which contains a list of all the foreign-owned firms in the Charlotte region. All of these firms are eligible to be nominated for the awards.
CBR: How can someone submit a Mayor’s International Community Awards nomination?
AG: To submit a foreign-owned firm nomination, complete this online form. To submit a nominee for the Patrick McCrory International Entrepreneur Award, or another individual award, first review the criteria and send us a biography, resume, and three letters of recommendation describing why a candidate should win the award. You can find our contact information here.
CBR: Is there any other information you would like to share about the Mayor’s International Community Awards?
AG: These awards are truly one-of-a-kind, as the Mayor selects the winners and presents the awards to them. We have a list of all the previous winners on our website, and as well as a YouTube channel, where you can watch previous winners’ videos and segments of previous award ceremonies, and photos posted on Facebook.
