Licensing & Permitting
Most businesses are required to obtain some kind of license or permit to operate – local, state and/or federal – and sometimes multiple permits are required. For example, certain types of businesses may be required to obtain special permits from, among others, local health authorities, building inspectors, police and/or fire departments, and alcohol beverage control commissions. In addition, zoning approvals surrounding regulations and ordinances regarding land use may also be required. If property is being improved, building and land development permits may be necessary. Understanding all of the various licenses and permits required for your business is critical. Not complying with licensing and permitting regulations can lead to expensive fines and put your business at serious risk. Businesses are encouraged to consult with a professional, such as a small business attorney, to help them understand all applicable legal issues related to operating their specific business.
