First and foremost, Happy Memorial Day! We hope that you're enjoying time with family today, while also finding the time to remember and honor all those who have served.

It's hard to believe we're so close to the end of Small Business Month, isn't it? Today's featured entrepreneur comes to us with over 25 years of experience in her field, and she has used this experience to assist local organizations, including the City of Charlotte. She's also active in our local business community and has used local resources, including Mecklenburg County's contracting program, to help her grow her business.

Without further ado, meet Dr. Carole Isom-Barnes, the owner of Xperience Leadership, a management consulting firm.

CBRbiz.com: If you could go back and give yourself a piece of advice when you first started, what would it be?

Dr. Carole Isom-Barnes: My advice would be to have a plan on how, when, and where to expend my resources in order to maximize time, money and energy. When I first started, I spent too much time and energy in areas that were beneficial, but not as beneficial as they needed to be. I should have pivoted in some areas sooner.

CBRbiz.com: Which local resources have helped you the most?

Dr. Carole Isom-Barnes: Partnering with the Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) was very instrumental in helping me to understand and maneuver federal contracting. The coaching was also invaluable.

CBRbiz.com: What’s your personal mantra?

Dr. Carole Isom-Barnes: Operating a small business is extremely rewarding. I would not want to do anything else, but it is also challenging. I begin each day with, "God anointed me to do this, and because he has equipped me, I can."
