As a business owner, what resource organizations have helped you along the way, and how?

The Charlotte LGBT Chamber of Commerce helped Styles by Joshua become a Nationally Certified LGBT Business, and provided multiple network opportunities. Charlotte Geek helped create my amazing website and awesome marketing items.

What has been the biggest lesson learned during your entrepreneurial journey, and how have you used that to grow your business?

When working for yourself, you must always promote and network, especially in the Cosmetology world. You must set yourself apart from the others. It’s the little things you provide and do that make people want to come to you. I am always looking for new ways to better serve my clients and their beauty needs.

From life in a submarine to a star stylist, you’ve had quite the journey! What advice would you give others who have far-off dreams?

Never stop dreaming! Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it and put in the hard work to achieve those dreams. Never give up, no matter how hard it may get!

What was the most challenging thing about cosmetology school?

That is a tough one. I would have to say pin-curls and finger-waves were my kryptonite and occasionally pedicures. Sometimes it was difficult working on other people’s feet.

What impact would you like to make on the Charlotte cosmetology/hair/beard community?

I would like to show people it’s not just pushing products or cutting hair, it’s about understanding the human element too. You need to be able to connect with the clients on a personal level, understand their needs, and help them feel better about themselves.
