Small Business Saturday is November 28, 2020 — the post-Thanksgiving shopping day committed to supporting local businesses. We know how vital small businesses are to creating local jobs and preserving neighborhoods, which is why we’re excited to celebrate and encourage consumers to shop small.
While this holiday season will undoubtedly look different due to COVID-19, there’s reason to keep your spirits high when it comes to Small Business Saturday. Last year consumers spent a record-high of $19.6 billion,¹ and this year, polls indicate 86% of shoppers still plan to buy gifts this season. In fact, the majority of those customers plan to do at least half of their holiday shopping from local businesses.²
As you prepare for holiday shopping, it’s important to take extra measures to ensure safety for your business and customers, in addition to promoting your business. Here are some tips for both businesses and consumers to make the most out of Small Business Saturday:

Promoting your business and getting the word out about special promotions is key to encouraging customers to shop local. One of the most effective ways to do that is to promote Small Business Saturday on social media, especially during COVID-19.

- Ensure your customers know your COVID-19 safety procedures.
- Promote your online store for shoppers who stay home.

TIPS FOR CONSUMERS:
Your support means everything to small businesses. Visiting local stores, shopping online, and posting on social media are all ways to help small businesses. Practice social distancing if you plan to visit stores. But however you shop, stay local and support your community.
- Commit to purchasing at least one item from a locally-owned small business retailer.
- Follow your favorite Charlotte small businesses on social media. Post about your purchases using the hashtags: #ShopSmallCLT #ShopSmall #SmallBizSat #ShopLocal.
- Shop local online. Hundreds of local businesses have grown their online presence in response to COVID-19.
- Give gift cards or eGift cards this holiday season. Gift cards give small businesses sales immediately and encourage others to stay local.
- Look for curbside pickup options. Many stores will bring your items out to your car if you order online.
- Check out promotions and plan your shopping experience. Check to see if your favorite small businesses are doing promotions ahead of time and make a list of items you want to purchase.
