Emerging Leaders Q&A: Brandon Crumpton, Key Signature Entertainment

The Emerging Leaders Q&A series spotlights business owners who have participated in the SBA’s Emerging Leaders Program. Each featured business owner completed this extensive training with over 100 hours of classroom time and one-on-one counseling. Since its inception in 2008, the SBA’s Emerging Leaders Initiative has trained over 5,000 small business owners, creating over 6,500 jobs, generating over $300 million in new financing, and securing over $3.16 billion in government contracts.

Here is an Emerging Leader’s story.

What is Key Signature Entertainment: Key Signature is a live music and entertainment resource for private parties and special events. My name is Brandon Crumpton and I am the President of Key Signature Entertainment with over 15 years of experience in the industry. I realized that event professionals and musicians speak a different language. I built Key Signature to bridge that communication gap so that both musicians and event professionals could produce successful events together. The best part about what we do is taking your ideas and creating a live music experience for you and your guests to enjoy. We do that following our motto, “GOOD PEOPLE, GOOD MUSIC.” What that means is we’re in the people business first and music business second. So if you need local, regional, or national live music for a private party or special event… WE GOT YOU!

The Emerging Leaders Experience

Q: How did you get connected to the SBA’s Emerging Leaders program, and what was your biggest takeaway?

I believe I received an email from one of the organizations we’re involved with. At the time I felt like the business was stuck. We were doing well but just couldn’t seem to get to the next level. I felt like this opportunity was a way to learn how to break through. My biggest takeaway was learning that different types of businesses have the same obstacles to overcome. I also now understand that some businesses don’t scale because of the business owner. He or she isn’t ready to take that leap.

Q: How have you been able to apply what you learned from the program at Key Signature Entertainment?

The program helped me understand the numbers related to my business. The numbers don’t lie! They tell the true picture of how your business is doing and where you’re going.

Q: How has the program helped you grow your business?

Understanding the numbers let me know we needed to hire additional support staff and so I did. I learned that I can’t be buried in the process of running my business and expect to have time to work on my business.

Q: When it comes to educational programs like this, what advice would you give to fellow entrepreneurs so they get the most out of the experience?

Do the work and make some friends! It’s not easy to maintain your personal life, business life, and take on going back to school. Realize that others are making the same commitment as you and you’re not going at this alone.
