Opening a Business? Take the first step with OpenCounter! The City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County have launched their online permitting partnership through OpenCounter. OpenCounter is an intuitive, web-based permitting wizard tailored to small businesses.
This innovative tool effortlessly guides you through the complex process of locating a physical space for your business by identifying the proposed business type and asking a few conditional questions. A responsive, color-coded map is then revealed to show where your type of business is permitted within the city. Once a location has been selected, you can begin an application through the Business Portal.
The Business Portal asks the right questions in the right order to provide you with requirements, fees, and processing time associated with your proposed business. Once the OpenCounter application is completed, you can choose to either make a formal online submittal to City Land Development or print and save your application to use as a resource for future submittals to City and County agencies.
This partnership is the first of its kind in Charlotte. Intended to help business owners navigate the multifaceted regulatory process, OpenCounter’s smart design and simple language make it easy to navigate and understand. OpenCounter is available in English and Spanish, so if you’re looking to launch a business in Charlotte, let OpenCounter help guide you through the permitting process.
