Carolina Small Business Development Fund is a statewide nonprofit and Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI). Very small businesses account for 87 percent of employers in the state, and have seen job growth even through this tough economy. The workers they employ spend on goods and services locally, save for the future, and pay taxes that generate revenue to support our publicly funded programs and services.

Carolina Small Business Development Fund has stepped in to help fill the lending gap left by major banks that have tighten lending criteria and pulled out of many underserved communities across the state. Launched in 2010, our direct small business lending program has invested $32.7 million that has funded 458 small business loans and created or retained 1,018 jobs in communities throughout North Carolina.

Vendor Registration

City of Charlotte Vendor Registration. Any business that wants to do business with the City of Charlotte must be registered as a vendor. Based on the company profile you create, the City will provide City departments with information about the product and services available from you. Once registered you are encouraged to  review and update your business profile online and make necessary adjustments. To review your business profile you will need to use the username and password that you created when you logged on under Vendor Registration.

The City of Charlotte’s City Business INClusion program encourages minority, women and small business (MWSBE) participation in City contracting, promotes Charlotte Regional Area small business participation and opens the door to greater prospects and competition among Certified MWSBE firms. Contact Zoning

All businesses must call and obtain zoning approval prior to opening a business in Charlotte. The zoning office can be reached by dialing 311 from within the city limits or at 704-336-7600 if dialing from outside the city limits. The zoning office is located at 2145 Suttle Ave, Charlotte NC.

Request Fire Prevention Inspection

All businesses operating from commercial property in the Charlotte city limits must receive and pass a fire prevention inspection. Contact the Charlotte Fire Prevention Bureau at 704-336-2101 to schedule an inspection.

Register Your Alarm System With The Police Department

If you have an electronic burglar alarm system installed within the Charlotte city limits or the unincorporated areas of Mecklenburg County, it must be registered with the police department. Businesses are also encouraged to make every effort to develop relationships with their community police officers nd request security surveys (also known as a CPTED survey).

Previous Property Use

Knowing the zoning of property is not always enough! You should also know the last known use of the property and if the existing building is currently vacant and, if so, how long it has been vacant. Why? Because even if the zoning classification allows you to use the property for your intended purpose, the use of the property determines what building codes apply.Knowing this will help save you time and money!For existing buildings located within the Charlotte city limits the Charlotte Fire Prevention Bureau may have records on last known occupancy and use.

Urban District Property

Special urban districts exist in the Charlotte city limits such as UMUD, MUDD, TOD, PED and TS. If your property is located in an urban district you may be required to make improvements to your site before you can begin operating your business.

The Charlotte Zoning Ordinance will help you identify requirements for special districts. If you are in an urban district and are required to make improvements to your site, you must attend a conceptual meeting prior to plan submittal.

Bringing Property Up to Code

Failing to learn this before you buy or lease property could cost you more money than you anticipated. Contact CTAC to learn if improvements are required. Be prepared to discuss the details of your project and have available your property address, what the previous use of the property was, whether or not the building is vacant and how long it has been vacant, and what you propose to use the property for. For most improvements you will be required to have a building permit before doing any work.

Create your Business Plan

LACCC members receive the benefit of being connected to well-established LACCC business owners and professionals who can serve as mentors and help with new business start-ups. Another step is through the LACCC Foundation Funded Programs, LACCC Business Builder, where members learn the process of integration and success in the new economy by learning new skills and providing the access, contacts, contracts, mentors, resources, opportunities, and business acculturation that will enable them to quickly achieve the next level of goals in their business plan. Classes are offered in Spanish and/or English on “How To Start A Business” and “How To Design or Revise a Business Plan.” Other professionals are provided as mentors to the business start-up owners.

The J. Murrey Atkins Library is proud to serve UNC Charlotte and the larger community. Atkins Library plays many roles – a sanctuary for quiet study, a multimedia and research center, and a collaborative work space.
Atkins is the largest academic library in the southern piedmont and is a member of the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries. It house nearly 2 million volumes and has access to over 55,000 electronic journals, and about 500,000 electronic books. Learn more at library.uncc.edu.

Part of its vision is to create meaningful collaboratios among university, business, and community leaders to address economic development issues and opportunities within the region. The J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte offers public access and services to community patrons on a wide variety of topics. Among those services is our Patent and Trademark Resource Center.

Business entrepeneurs and investors may obtain assistance with their patent and trademark search and application process by our specially trained research staff. Patent searching can also help patrons learn and track the latest technological developments of particular companies.

Ventureprise® brings UNC Charlotte research and innovations to market while developing entrepreneurial perspectives and habits among UNC Charlotte students. As a non-profit center for entrepreneurship and innovation, Ventureprise directly supports emerging university entrepreneurs and shares its in-depth expertise with collaborators working to build metro Charlotte’s innovation-driven entrepreneurial support system.Ventureprise operates the National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps Site program at UNC Charlotte guiding researchers through customer discovery and business model creation to bring promising inventions to market. The Ventureprise Launch accelerator program sponsored by the NC IDEA Foundation provides evidence-based entrepreneurship including customer discovery and business model creation to Charlotte-area innovation-based teams addressing national markets.

Ventureprise serves as the Charlotte region’s source for entrepreneurship and innovation policy and data. Recent projects include The Impact of Innovation—Charlotte Entrepreneur Growth Report assessment of regional performance.

The 49er Foundry in the PORTAL Innovation Center is a business incubator for selected UNC Charlotte students. This co-working space offers coaching and guidance to support experiential learning that may lead to a successful business launch. Ventureprise operates the National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps Site program at UNC Charlotte guiding researchers through customer discovery and business model creation to bring promising inventions to market. I-Corps is a selective program open to UNC Charlotte faculty and student researchers. Selected researchers at Davidson College, Johnson C. Smith University, Queens University and North Carolina Research Campus may also apply.

The Ventureprise Launch accelerator program sponsored by the NC IDEA Foundation provides evidence-based entrepreneurship including customer discovery and business model creation to Charlotte-area innovation-based teams addressing national markets. Teams that complete the program are eligible to compete in the Charlotte Venture Challenge. Applications will open in early 2017.

Womens Business Center

The Women’s Business Center helps women-owned businesses start and grow. We empower women by offering tools and support to establish businesses, stabilize their companies, generate sustainable profits, strategize for future growth and contribute to the growth and economic development of the community.The WBC-Charlotte provides:

Womens Business Center

The Women’s Business Center of North Carolina is a partnership program between the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the North Carolina Institute of Minority Economic Development Inc. (NCIMED). It is funded by a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration. SBA’s cooperation does not constitute or imply its endorsement of any options, products or services. Reasonable arrangements for persons with disabilities will be made if requested at least two weeks in advance. All SBA and NCIMED programs are extended to the public on a nondiscriminatory basis.

  • Hosting financing events such as the SBA guaranteed Small Loan Advantage program across the state. These events target small and startup businesses to help them with access to capital

  • Long term relationships with local, national, community banks and credit unions to assist our clients with loan packaging

  • Support, attend and exhibit at procurement events such as Marketplace- a reverse trade show for businesses
  • Business matchmaking with government agencies such as the State HUB office and other state, federal and local coordinators
